The Story Behind Intellestate Law: Protecting What Matters Most—From Ideas to Legacies
At Intellestate Law, we believe intelligent planning changes lives. It’s more than just drafting documents or filing applications—it’s about understanding the people behind every plan, every invention, and every dream. Our name, Intellestate, comes from “Intelligent Estate,” a reflection of our mission: to protect what matters most from every angle—your family, your assets, and your ideas.
How We Began
Before founding Intellestate Law, our attorney, Jason Toomey, spent nearly 15 years leading patent work for a Boston technology company, where he built and managed a portfolio of more than 300 patents. That experience gave him a rare perspective on how ideas become assets, and how much those assets can mean to the people who create them.
Jason saw firsthand how much effort, hope, and personal sacrifice went into every innovation. Over time, he realized that what he valued most about the work wasn’t just protecting inventions; it was protecting the people behind them. That’s what inspired him to launch Intellestate Law: a firm designed to bring that same dedication and strategic thinking to every aspect of people’s lives, from their intellectual property to their estate planning.
An Approach Built on Understanding
We often say our clients are complicated—and that’s exactly what we’re good at. No two families, entrepreneurs, or inventors are the same, which is why we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions.
Whether we’re helping a young family set up a trust, guiding parents through guardianship choices, or helping a startup secure its first patent, our focus is always on clarity and connection. We take the time to listen, to understand what keeps you up at night, and to design a plan that gives you real peace of mind.
Jason’s background in both engineering and law shapes the way we think. We approach each plan like an engineer would—methodically, with precision and purpose. Every decision is part of a larger system, designed to make sure your wishes and protections work exactly as intended when you and your loved ones need them most.
Why “Intelligent” Planning Matters
Too often, people think of estate planning or IP protection as a checklist—something you do once and forget. We take a different view. To us, intelligent planning is an ongoing relationship. It’s about building strategies that adapt as your life, business, or family evolves.
For our Massachusetts estate planning clients, that means creating more than just wills or trusts. It means building a plan that keeps your family out of court and conflict, ensures your assets are properly titled and funded, and grows with you over time.
For our intellectual property clients across the U.S., intelligent planning means seeing beyond the patent or trademark application. We help you look ahead—anticipating what protection you’ll need as your ideas develop, how your IP fits into your larger goals, and how to safeguard your work as it moves from idea to impact.
The People Behind the Work
When you work with us, you won’t be passed off to a junior associate or an automated system. You’ll work directly with Jason, who brings both technical understanding and legal insight to every client relationship.
You’ll also meet Kat Toomey, our Director of Client Services, who ensures that every client feels informed and supported from the first phone call to the final signing. With her background in education, Kat has a gift for making complex topics easy to understand and for making every interaction personal.
Together, we’ve built a practice where clients feel seen, heard, and cared for—not just advised.
Our Roots, Our Reach
We’re proud to call Northborough, Massachusetts home, serving estate planning clients throughout the MetroWest region. For intellectual property work, we serve clients nationwide—innovators, small business owners, and creators of all kinds.
No matter where you are, we make it easy to connect. You can meet with us in our office, over Zoom, or by phone. Some of our estate planning clients even choose in-home consultations, so they can discuss important decisions in the comfort of their own space.
What We Believe
At its heart, Intellestate Law is about connection—between people, between generations, and between the ideas that define us. We believe:
- That planning should be personal, not procedural.
- That your ideas deserve the same protection as your home or savings.
- That peace of mind isn’t a luxury—it’s something you can engineer.
We bring those beliefs into every conversation, every document, and every plan we create.
Protecting What Matters Most
When you work with us, you’re not just getting legal documents or filings—you’re getting a trusted relationship. Someone who knows your story, understands your priorities, and helps you navigate the legal pieces so you can focus on what really matters.
